There’s a common misconception that when winter arrives it’s not the time to be fishing for bass.  Actually, winter can be one of the most fun times for bass fishing because it’s much more challenging.

Winter bass fishing provides conditions that are much more difficult partially because of the freezing temperatures, which can be uncomfortable, especially if you aren’t dressed properly.  It’s also more challenging because the bass are harder to find.

Sure, the winter temperatures are a bit of a challenge but with the right gear, the right attitude, and some hot coffee, you could be catching some tasty bass.  Think of it like preparing for a sporting event.  You’ll need to condition yourself against the elements, and prepare yourself mentally for the challenge. After all, it’s really no different than participating in any other winter sport, like skiing.

When fishing in the winter for bass you will need to do two things – be patient, and learn to concentrate.  But the most important thing you need to do is learn to move very slowly.  This can be difficult because your mind will be telling you to move fast to stay warm.

Thanks to technology, there are all kinds of thermo thinsulate clothing on the market that you can purchase.  It’s thin, very warm, and comfortable to wear.  No need to be bulky and much easier to fish in comfort, but never the less it can still be hard to stand still and leave your lure completely motionless for a long period of time.

However, once you master the technique of winter bass fishing you won’t be able to get enough.  Winter bass fishing can reward you with some of biggest bass you can imagine.  And since you have fewer anglers to compete against, your chance of catching one of these is much higher.

The large female bass are more tempted to grab your bait during the cold winter than in the warmer months, which means you’ve got a much better chance of catch that big fish.

Another important aspect of winter bass fishing is knowing where to go and where to find the bass. In other words, you must learn the bass winter habits.  Locations that have shallow water are a better choice.  You’ll want to find the locations where shallow and deep water meet, because bass like to hang in these areas of change.  They also like to hang around the weeds and vegetation.  If you find these locations, you’ll improve your chances of catching those bass.

Bass fishing in the winter is a great time to catch the nice sized bass to are so elusive in the summer months.  It’s a perfect way to help pass those drab winter months, and think of the great bass fishing stories you’ll get to tell.
