What is the World Record largemouth Bass?

Bass Fishing in the Rain

Back in 1932 George Perry took the record for biggest largemouth bass caught, at 22 pounds 4 ounces, that was 32 ½” long, and 28 ½” at the girth.  It was caught in Georgia backwoods on Montgomery Lake.

George Perry, then 19 wasn’t out to set a world record for bass.  Rather he and his friend were out catching food for super. The record bass was caught using a Creek Chub Perch Scale Wiggle Fish.  The weight and the measurements of the bass were recorder in Helena, Georgia where it was notorized.  George Perry was later rewarded with $75 in merchandise from the Field and Stream fishing contest, for taking first prize.  From the beginning, this was a controversial record because there was no photo and no mount, just a tasty family meal.

The latest catch was in California on March 20, 2006, by Mac Weakley on Dixon Lake isn’t without controversy too.  Mac Weakley and two friends had been fishing for bass on Dixon Lake for a couple of years.  But it was that March day in 2006 when he hooked that 25 pounds 1 ounce bass.

It seems there is always controversy around bass records.  Other anglers fishing across the banks claim to have seen Mac Weakley set his bass hook five times and then on a foul hook to the side of the bass, not the mouth.  Before the officials could arrive, the fish had been photographed and released.

However, interviews with Mac Weakley explain that he was only trying to do what was right by releasing the catch that was spawning.  They also thought that because it was foul hooked it wouldn’t qualify.  It was only later that they discovered that it may in fact qualify.  He used a white jig with a skirt as well as a rattle on 15-pound test.  He was very excited to see such a catch in his boat.  Some may want to dispute Mac Weakley’s catch but it appears it just may be recognized as the new world record.

In California Largemouth are not native but they are stocked years and for some reason they seem to grow faster here than they do in their native habitats.  Perhaps it’s thanks to the stocked trout that the bass love to feed on, and that includes Dixon Lake where the record breaker was pulled from.

Smallmouth bass also has a world record which dates back 50 years ago on July 9th.  It was then that D.L. Hayes caught an 11 pound 15 ounce smallmouth bass trolling a pearl colored Bomber on a lake on the Tennessee Kentucky border called the Dale Hollow Lake.  To date that record hasn’t been broken.

World records are not, Mac Weakley has a heck of a fish story to tell for years to come, and it sure isn’t about the fish that got away. Those that have tried bass fishing quickly find themselves hooked.  This is a fish that gives the angler the challenge they are looking for.  Who knows, it could be you that holds the next world record on bass either largemouth or smallmouth
